I was a Management Trainee for a Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Multi-National Company. I held a much coveted position as every year, this MNC employed less than 10 fresh graduates, and its various rounds of interviews were akin to completing a module in University. The only difference was that in University, I was given four months before taking the module’s examination, for the MNC, I was given a mere four days to do market research and while I only had to deal with a couple of multiple choice questions in University, I had to face a panel of department managers and even regional heads, for the interviews.
In my peers’ eyes, I held a dream job as I got to attend glamorous product launches, closed door media events, concerts held by stars who were spokespeople for the various brands and got the products free of charge on a monthly basis. However, I experienced a growing cognitive dissonance as time passed. Eventually, I gave up my passion for practicality and pension. I met up with Carey and Ern Ern from Peter Tan Organization (PTO®) who opened the career and its many prospects to me. I was in the sales lingo, “closed” by Ern Ern and Carey using their annual income payslip, over a $5.20 Aloha Soda at Tampines Cartel. I proceeded to take the three mandatory examinations and as they say, the rest is history.
Up till this day, I still describe the encounter as a ‘charming coincidence’ and being in Peter Tan Organization (PTO®), with its organized system and extremely supportive culture, I believe that I would be propelled to greater heights in my professional and personal development.
